THE HEARTH AND ROOM

Kitchen is the central unit in the house. In Quiroga´s area, as in the rest of the eastern mountains, was located on the top floor. The role of the kitchen is varied, around it revolves the life of the family when they stay at home: it is the place where the family cooks and eats, where receives visits, where they can tell traditional village stories...

 Furniture in the kitchen depends on the number of inhabitants of the house and its economical power. Its creator is the user or the craftsman.

The most important pieces are seats, which are located around the hearth, chaired by the “escano”, with capacity for several people and reserved for the elderly. Benches, tables, chairs, wardrobe, cupboard, drawer, trough, basin, dishes ... complete the furniture of most traditional houses in this area
Rooms, with the evolution of home, changed from being in a single room, shared by humans and animals, to the partitioning of space in the kitchen, stables and sleeping rooms and, often, a sitting room.
In the room were the beds, which were suffering its own evolution: it changed from the original straw or dry leaves, later mattresses filled with straw or leaves of corn, until the bed with headboard.
As supplements to the bed in the room: the night table with the bottom to put the chamber pot, the closet or cabinet, the cot (in the case of children), the sink, which is the only piece of hygiene, with a basin, water pitcher, mirror, etc..
